Professional tool reviews for professionals

Once again, Skil has achieved an impressive balance between performance and price, making the PWRCore 20 brushless oscillating multifunction tool extremely valuable. If you are a budget-conscious professional or a professional-conscious DIYer, this is an excellent all-round multi-function tool that can keep up with the more expensive professional brands.

The Skil PWRCore 20 brushless oscillating multifunction tool is the brand’s flagship model, equipped with a brushless motor and a shock absorption system. We tested it against the best cordless models in the industry to see if its performance and design should attract the attention of budget-conscious professionals.

For cutting and sanding, Skil's brushless motors can run up to 17,000 OPM at an angle of 3.6°. The 6-speed shift dial on the side allows you to control the speed starting from 11,000 OPM. Thanks to electronic communication, the tool sends a signal to the battery when it needs more power to keep its speed constant.

According to the cutting and sanding we have done, the speed is very good. It did not challenge Milwaukee and Fein at the top of the rankings, but it was better than our expectations of DIY models. It is more in line with the speed we get from Makita and Bosch.

For this Skil swing multifunctional tool, the design team introduced a vibration control system to distinguish it from most other multifunctional tools. The head and the motor are isolated from the main housing by the damping system, the effect is very good!

Skil claims that it reduces vibration by 90% compared to the model without it. The vibrations of Milwaukee and Fein are still the lowest, but Skil's system is much better than most standard multifunction tools, including other premium professional brands.

We noticed that when we pushed the blade into the incision, there was some movement of the head. This did not affect the accuracy of our cutting, but it takes a few minutes to get used to it.

In the lever and bolt system design, Skill has one of the better blade replacement systems. Twisting the top lever to one side will cause the bolts to fall off, enough to replace most blades with rear cutouts.

If you need to completely remove the bolt to use a fully enclosed sand pad or blade, you need to push the bolt in and twist 90º. This is a very fast system, and we find it easier to use than many other systems in this style.

It is not as convenient as Starlock, nor as fast as the clamping system we have seen from Craftsman and DeWalt. However, it can use a wider variety of accessories.

In order to understand how Skil combines its design and performance, we compared it with other wireless models through our oscillatory multi-tool test track. It tied for fourth place with a time of 1:52.

This puts it ahead of some big names such as Milwaukee, Metabo HPT and Makita. Although its cutting speed is at an average level in the wireless group, the rapidity of the blade change system has greatly improved its ranking.

The test track consists of five parts and two blade replacements. You can view the full details in our face-to-face review, or you can directly view this summary:

As I write this article, it is hard to believe that we have been using battery-powered chainsaws for more than a decade. During that time, they have become the main tool for many people with higher power levels and now commonplace 18-inch bars. With this kind of performance, we want to see if there is any suitable smaller [...]

The price is now $99, how does it stack up? I am between getting it and Kobalt because I have invested in both systems.
