We are well aware that the DeWalt 20V Max XR oscillator multifunction tool is one of the top models available. Its solid design and stable performance are of great significance to the upgrade of the previous version. Most importantly, DeWalt's value proposition is outstanding. Whether you are already using DeWalt's 20V Max system, or just looking for a wireless multi-function tool with great value for money, we can easily recommend this.

For several reasons, we waited for months to test the DeWalt 20V Max XR brushless cordless oscillator multi-tool. First of all, we know that this is an upgrade to the previous brushless model. Secondly, because many of you let us know how good it is!

When we started making initial cuts, two things were clear. For starters, the tool seems to be really faster than the previous brushless model, and obviously a big upgrade from the original brushed model. Considering that the DeWalt DCS356 has the same 20,000 OPM speed and 3.2° arc as the 355, this is a bit surprising.

We also noticed that the vibration seems to be more controllable than before. DeWalt does not tout a specific damping system, but it seems to improve our hands.

In order to understand how it compares with other cordless oscillating multifunctional tools, we put it on the PTR test track. Here are its contents:

Along the way, we had to change parts twice.

After the dust settled, DeWalt completed the track in 1 minute and 27 seconds. Putting it in context, it ranks third overall, second only to Fein's Supercut wireless first place (1:24) and second place Flex 24V multi-function tool (1:26).

It is the combination of accessory changes, design and performance that has earned DEWALT such a high position. Clip-on changes are very fast. It's not as fast as Starlock, but it's very close. The only disadvantage is when your accessories do not have a rear cutout and you need to use the included universal adapter to install them.

Physical design also helps. Since we had to change the angle to cut from all directions, the shape, size and weight made it highly maneuverable.

Then there is the cutting and sanding speed. Although other models have larger swing angles, DeWalt's brushless motors can maintain high speeds and work faster.

One of the obvious changes from the 355 is that the DeWalt DCS356 has three speed settings instead of one. There is a selector switch on the foot, instead of taking the route of the side variable speed dial.

Many cordless tools have a lock or lock switch, and DeWalt actually combines the two. With the trigger down, push the switch from either right side to lock the trigger. Push it from either side with the trigger off and it will lock it.

The physical dimensions of this DeWalt cordless oscillating multi-tool are the same as the previous model and Atomic version. It measures 11.2 inches from front to back and weighs 2.3 pounds naked. When using a 2.0Ah battery, the weight will increase to 3.0 pounds, which is very easy to control.

As we mentioned before, DeWalt's accessories can be replaced very quickly. The quick change system uses a very strong spring to push the blade clamp down and hold the accessory in place. You can push it up with two fingers to expose the interface and hold the blade in place, then release the clamp to secure it.

It needs accessories that are cut at the back to work. If you have fully enclosed, DEWALT will provide a universal adapter to make them work. However, you will lose the speed and convenience of the system.

If you already have a battery and a charger, it is expected that DCS356 will cost US$139 as a bare machine. However, as we write this article, it is priced at $99 on Acme Tools. If you want this kit, it costs $199. Here are its contents:

As an added bonus, you can use Acme Tools' kit to get a 5.0Ah battery or DCD797 hammer drill for free. The transaction will expire on July 2, 2021.
